Vendor Spotlight: Snoep Winkel Farms
"And God said, 'See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food; and it was so." Genesis 1:29-30
Snoepwinkel is a small family farm located in Frankford Township in scenic Sussex County, New Jersey. They raise grass-fed beef, chicken, lamb and pork, as well as eggs.
Our farm began as a 4-H project for our children. The more we learned about the conventional methods by which most livestock are raised, the more convinced we became that we wanted our animals to be raised as God intended-eating grass as the basis of their diet.
Whether raising a chicken or steer, we believe that the quality of the animals' lives is reflected in the quality of the food. The emphasis is on traditional farming methods focusing on small herds, animal diversity, natural ingredients and grazing as part of growing movement back towards environmentally friendly agriculture. We do not give our animals steroids, growth hormones, nor sub-therapeutic levels of antibiotics.
Our meat chickens are pasture-raised in pens that are moved twice daily to provide fresh grass. They are slaughtered at an inspected facility when they are 8 to 9 weeks of age, and still young and tender. Our egg layers are free-range and spend as much time as possible outdoors. Eggs are gathered at least twice daily to ensure freshness.
We raise grass-fed, grass-finished Hereford and Hereford-cross steers, a calm, friendly breed that produce a lean and very tasty meat. Our meat has been graded to be on average between 90 to 92 % lean.
Our sheep flock is a mix of Hampshire, Romney, Cheviot, Suffolk and Dorset genetics. Our lambs are milk-fed and remain with mama sheep to get a full 5- 6 months worth of milk and all the pasture they want. This produces a leaner, mild-flavored meat.
We prefer to raise the heritage breeds of pigs such as Red Duroc, Hereford and Poland China. Though they tend to grow out a bit smaller than the commercial breeds, the meat is very flavorful.
As the years have passed, we continue to remember that we are stewards of the land and animals God has blessed us with. We thank all our customers for the privilege of providing you with best quality of meat we can raise.
